You can't use modern yardsticks to measure events and/or people from the past because when hindsight is used, humans will always be found to be wanting. He, like other historical figures, was a person of his time. The person whose prose would eventually become our National Anthem was a slave holder himself (he manumitted his slaves in the 1830's) but Francis Scott Key was a lawyer and at times he defended both sides of the issue (from gaining slaves legal freedom to prosecuting abolitionists who he felt were destabilizing lawful rule). ![]() Many claim that it is a protest against the slave holding agrarian past of the southern states at least but they are contrasted with those who consider kneeling to be a sign of disrespect for those who died to preserve the freedom Americans enjoy. it seems that NFL players are kneeling while the National Anthem is played. There has been a disturbing trend as of late.
